CD / DVD STAND
Well I'm a huge movie fanatic and I started off with a rotating CD stand (I put all my burnt DVD movies into CD cases to save space) that I got at a store that held 100 CD cases. I thought that would last, but soon found myself buying a CD stand that would hold approximately 200 cases. Well, with the carousel stand and the vertical stand full, and DVDs starting to stack up on the floor, I thought it was time to put my welding/fabricating skills to use and build a stand of my own.
I measured that you could hold about 29 CD cases per foot of rack space. So, I measured that along the downstairs wall next to the fireplace I had about 4 feet of room length-wise. So, with a 5 layer stand, plus room on the bottom totaling 6 rows by 4 feet by 29 per foot, I'm guessing this new stand will hold approximately 696 movies. Now that it's done and I've consolidated my other 2 stands onto it, it's more than half full. So by my guess, I'll probably be at work building it's twin by the end of the year.
Time: approx. 6 hrs of casual work (most time taken doing measurements). Cost: $90.33CDN for metal.
The old carousel stand (plus more stacked on top) held 100 movies.
This stand held about 200 movies.
Behind the speaker will be the new home of the new stand.
I was working in the garage shop, but had to keep the doors open due to
paint/gas fumes stored there, so it was COLD!
I used 4' long 1/2" by 1/8th" thick angle iron for the lengths, and the same
type of angle iron but 3ft long for the legs. 1/8th" thick flat bar was
used to brace in between the angle iron lengths for added ridgedness.
600+ CD cases believe it or not, actually has a LOT of weight to it!
Cutting the sheet metal (16 or 18 gauge, I can't remember.. 'bought it last
year) was probably the biggest pain in the ass. I didn't have a large
table to lay it on so the jigsaw would case the metal to vibrate up and down a
lot. I ended up going through 3 jigsaw blades snapping because of this.
This is where a nice set of shears would come in handy!
Stand completed (I'll paint it in the spring) with sheet metal laying between
the angle iron.
And the new space with movies installed :)
May'05 update: painted the rack, added more support to sides, and wider
base
Aug'06 update: almost time to either add to this one or build another!
